Compensation Advocacy

Compensation: Advocacy

In today's world, indeed, in any hiring environment, past, present or future, if you do not advocate for yourself, no one else will!

Obviously, the problem or transition situation indicated above is much more complex. If as a candidate, you do not consciously set up a scenario that each time you are in a position to discuss or ask for compensation and you fail to ask or demand a level which is commensurate or least acceptable standard practice for the position that you are seeking you will pay significant dues later in your reputation consistently after hire. By not advocating for yourself during the hiring process; you will always be second guessed by management and especially by your direct supervisor/manager. Your judgment will consistently be questioned, every decision that you make will be given very close scrutiny, because the hiring authority will always wonder what “did you not tell them” during the interview process. What hidden secret did you attempt to conceal by not advocating for yourself again we reiterate that in hiring although there is risk for the candidate the risk faced by the hiring authority always outweighs the candidates risk. The issue at hand will always be a question similar to the one mentioned below.  “If you were good enough to be hired based on credentials, experiences, your accomplishments what did you leave out when you were being interviewed that allowed you to take less pay, a lower title or territory or assignment that you did not want them you actually deserved.

When the hiring authority low balls you on compensation or title, they expect you to ask for the most you can get in compensation, assignments and or benefits. When you do not, you automatically set up the scenario that she or he needs to always question every word, action or judgment that you make; in many cases for the remainder of your tenure with the company.

Yes, the old saying that you always get what you pay for is even more true in acquisition of human capital. Regardless of the admonitions to my clients, when you forget to ask for the job or the compensation you deserve you will always lose in the end even though you may have landed that job.

Getting that next job is important but getting the correct job at the correct pay and responsibility is just as important. Although the average time frame for staying with the company is normally 2 to 3 years in today's market the mistake you make by accepting a significantly lower compensation than you really wanted can follow and haunt you even to the next job. Be sure you go into every interview armed with information that will allow you to know the correct title, responsibility, and compensation by using the Web to study what is available and applicable.

As we have said often, in transition; your preparation may be the most important part of your job for you to ”get THAT NEXT job.”
