The Five Decision Makers

In response to a conversation with many candidates, I have listed three of the five DECISION MAKERS for any job below. This cluster of characteristics will help you determine how real a "job" opportunity is. The remaining characteristics will be found in our book. Below is that cluster.
When taking or selecting a new opportunity there are five questions that must be answered in the affirmative or the new position will or could be short-term or fail.
Here are the five.
1. Product: Is it real? Does it work? Is it needed? Is it priced correctly? Can the company support or service it?
2. How does the company treat their employees/internal people?
3. How does company treat their clients?
4. How does the company treat their vendors?
5. How do they refer to their competitors in their literature, website, interviews and presentations? Are they selling against or are they selling their own strengths?
When you have all five of the characteristics you can make a valid choice about any opportunity. Each by themselves is a great indicator of the “real” company; together this 5 point cluster will help to predict a real opportunity.
One of the most important jobs for any candidate is to find out what are the predictors of their success. This list is one of those predictors. Just as there is risk for the employer, there is also an equal risk for the candidate.
The first point reminds us that it is not whether the product is sexy, but whether it is real, and works! The other points above all speak to the ethos of the company.
Reputation speaks volumes usually. It is also often always earned.
