Basic Concepts for Initial Contract or Offer Letter

You must have this Hiring Terms Checklist completed prior to getting an offer letter drafted; or the Employment Contract from prospective employer. Hand to the Hiring Authority to use as a checklist.

You must also predetermine and reduce to writing the 3 magic numbers before any offer discussion: $ you Need to Have, $ you Ask For & $ you will Settle For.

 

A. Actual Title & Reporting Structure:  Top down and bottom up

B. Compensation: 

Base salary:

Variable & Additional Compensation:   How paid & when   

C. Stock & Ownership Position:

When eligible, % or amounts....costs

D. Benefits: 

Example: Medical, Dental, 401k   % paid

Life insurance....key man (family as well as business)

Vacation (3 weeks) & use    Personal Days

Car allowance or $ value of lease option

Health or golf club allowance

E. Expenses:

Example: Payable net 15 days on receipt or expense report)

Including but not limited to:

Cell phone (Retain ownership of personal cell phone number),

Computer, Company credit card and/or annual fee

Home office expenses:

Media connections fees, home office supplies and office phone charges

F. Travel:

Example: Reasonable business travel budget, expenses promptly paid (next pay period after submittal of expense report)

G. Administrative assistance

H. Termination/Separation Package:

Example: ….month notice or severance package. All benefits carried through severance period. ....6 months severance.....Outplacement Provisions....Secretarial costs
