Icing

Icing the cake?

In speaking to a coaching candidate this week, I used an analogy that I have not used in a while. It is not on my site, nor do I mention it currently in the book or CD.

Please think of your transition job as that of a pastry chef. You are assigned the task of baking a 10 inch tall chocolate cake with chocolate icing.

You would never think to bake a cake that is two inches tall and then put on 8 inches of icing. That is however, what many candidates do when looking for a new job. They prepare great presentation materials, purchase great attire for their interviews and forget that at some point the hiring manager will have actually review their real history. Be sure that you always remember two major concepts in transition; the presentation must show an ROI, but maybe even more importantly your actual future performance may be measured more by your follow-up than by your credentials or your presentation.

To keep the analogy going, although the cake is short, it must not only look good, it must also taste good and most importantly, not leave a bad after-taste.

All too often my candidates forget the simple truth that the “18 Day Protocol” is as important as the creation of the CPD products. One shows great creativity; but the other part, FOLLOW-UP shows (portends) what you will do when you are acting alone as an employee, long after hire.

The hiring manager’s risk begins not just at interview, or even at hire, but when the candidate starts the job, especially, when the candidate is not “under thumb.”

Do the entire transition process; demonstrate, not just your credentials, accomplishments, but re-enforce you attention to the work after hire. Follow-up!
