Executive Assistant's Role

In order to work with the Exec Asst, I find it important to the 5 major roles of the gatekeeper you will be able to circumvent them or use them as influence makers in your search.

You must treat the C Level's admin with the same respect as the C level person.

Indeed, they should be treat that way. Often the C level person takes his Exec Asst with him company to company. .

Engage them in your search, don't try to get around them, use them to be your advocate. They may have actually seen more credentials than the C level. Ask for their input.

They can be both a blocker and an advocate in your efforts to reach the "boss."

S/he is hired to do 4 of the below tasks, but the position almost requires the development of the 5th role which is you entry card to reach the decision makers.

As people work the system the 5th role often becomes the main role of the Office Receptionist/Gatekeeper, and it is that role which you use as a person of opportunity to reach the only person who can determine your fate with the company.

Good luck.

*Receptionist’s Roles: You will notice each of the activities below is given a weighted number.  Those activities labeled 4 & 5 are the most important tasks for you as a candidate.

So that when you call s/he may seem rude, or uncompromising, they also serve the other roles in the company and as such are you most potent ally in getting to the C level contact. As a C's admin they have also seen more "resumes"/presentation than anyone in the company short of HR and they know what good is, and will funnel those good ones to their boss.

  (4 & 5  are the most important.)

1. Gatekeeper
2. Screener and Processor
5. *****Mother Hen
3. First Contact
4. ****Office Guru/Maven/Trusted Confidant
